Te Ara o Mahurangi closed until further notice

posted May 10, 2017, 2:53 PM by Bill Russell

The Te Ara o Mahurangi trail in the Manawatu Gorge Scenic Reserve at Woodville will be closed until further notice. The trail is being realigned by Southstar Trails and the work is expected to take 2-3 weeks. For your own safety and to allow the new trail to settle, please respect this closure until the work has been completed. Some parts of the original trail are being retired and culverts recovered to be reused, so the retired portions of the trail will be unrideable.

The goal of this project is to realign the steeper portions of the trail to make a true grade 3 experience, suitable for families. Some of the steeper sections have been retained combined with around 300m of new trail to create a Grade 4 trail.  Both trails now join at a new safer exit onto Hall Block Rd. Overall around 1km of new trail will be created and 500m of unsustainable trail will be retired.

Funding has been provided by the Te Apiti Project Governance Group. The project is sponsored by DOC and jointly managed by MMBC and DOC.

Working bees will be scheduled in the next month to fine tune the new trail and de-vegetate the top part of the trail corridor. Over winter we will replant the retired portions of trail.

Back Track Temporarily Closed

posted Apr 26, 2016, 5:55 PM by Bill Russell

Temporary Closure of Back Track

The mountain bike track construction contractors at Arapuke Forest Park are now working in relatively close proximity to Back Track with resulting risk that debris may be falling down onto Back Track.
As a result Back Track will be closed to all users during working hours for safety reasons. 7am - 5pm
Signs are being installed today advising of the closure.
Mountain bikers and walkers are advised to use Zig Zag Road for both entering and leaving Arapuke Forest Park while Back Track is closed.
The Forest Park itself and all existing internal MTB and walking trails remain open.
Sledge Track is unaffected.

Back Track Closure

Back Track Closure

It is likely from later this week we may have to close Back Track as SouthStar Trails are working on a face directly above it building our new uphill.

There will be signage at Black Bridge, start of side-track (trail we share with walkers that starts at end of Kissing Rock) and the top of Back Track. Closure will be from 7am to 5pm, but you can still access the Arapuke Trails from Zig Zag road and side-trail.

Please respect the signage.  It will only be for a short period of time and the trail that they are building will be well worth the wait. Thank you.
