New Trails to ride!

posted Dec 9, 2010, 7:36 PM by Manawatu MTBClub
Two significant announcements were made this week.  The St James Cycle Trail is open for riding now and the Heaphy Track is open for mountain biking, during winter, for a 3 year trial period

The first trail in the New Zealand Cycle Trail has been open ready for this summer. St James Cycle Trail is situated on the DOC estate near Hamner Springs.  This is a serious 10 hour ride 64km, so plan for an overnight stop at one of the DOC huts along the way. more info here http://www.doc.govt.nz/features-archive/st-james-cycle-trail/

The other significant news is that the concerted campaign by MTBNZ to regain access to the Heaphy trail has met with success. Looks like the Heaphy could be our next winter club trip?? The following is a quote from the press release.

Mountain biking trials are now allowed on three park
tracks, on the Heaphy Track during the five-month
winter season only (1 May to 30 September); and
year-round on part of the Kill Devil Track and on the
Flora Saddle to Barron Flat track.

The DOC fact sheet is attached for download.
